Andaaz (1949)

The prototype for the Hindi film love triangle, Mehboob Khan's Andaaz pitched Dilip Kumar as Dilip, a dashing hero who saves the heroine's (Nargis) life and mistakes her gratitude for love.

Neeta trusts him with her father's business empire, but relinquishes her heart to her fiancé, brash playboy Rajan (Raj Kapoor).

A shattered Dilip finds it difficult to concentrate on his job, even as the immature Rajan suspects him of having an affair with his wife.

In a dramatic climax, Rajan threatens to beat Dilip to pulp with a tennis racquet. After he recovers, Dilip rushes to Neeta, who shoots him in a fit of rage and frustration.

Dilip Kumar essayed the loser with such conviction that the tag became an indelible refrain through the best work
of his career and earned him the sophisticated sobriquet of Tragedy King.
