A royal welcome in rural heartlands

April 21, 2009
In a few villages Sharad Pawar's beti is greeted by drums, trumpets and the age-old tutarees or curved brass horns once used to greet visiting aristocracy. Many villages have a significant Maratha population. In this belt Marathas form the backbone of the population -- about 70 per cent, adds a local.

Lunch is at wee Adachivadi where Supriya takes a quick break. Everyone in Adachivadi has a Pawar surname. Harshal Pawar. Aniket Pawar. Akshada Pawar. Rutuja Pawar... A sumptuous, traditional Maharashtrian meal -- Bhakri, Varan-Bhat, Bhaji, meat curry, Raita -- topped off with chilled Aam Ras is served. It's a party for the local folk. Plenty of food to be had by all.
