29 years in Bengal & going strong
1991
By now, winning had become a habit for Jyoti Basu. He led the Left Front government to its fourth victory in 1991.
In 1988, under Basu, the Gorkhaland issue was resolved with the establishment of the Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council. The Gorkhaland National Liberation Front led the movement, which disrupted the district with massive violence between 1986 and 1988.
1989 was a very crucial year for the Left Front when it agreed to support the V P Singh government even though the Bharatiya Janata Party supported the same government.
The Left stood by V P Singh when the BJP withdrew support to Singh after then Bihar chief minister Laloo Prasad Yadav arrested BJP president L K Advani when his Rath Yatra entered Bihar.
In June 1991, the Left for the first time agreed to support -- albeit from outside -- the Congress-led government of P V Narasimha Rao.
