Re-polling has been ordered in 15 polling stations spread over eight Legislative Assembly constituencies in Assam where second phase elections was held on Monday.

State Chief Electoral Officer J P Prakash informed that re-polling would be held from 7 am to 4 pm Wednesday.

Re-polling has been ordered in three polling stations in Mankachar LAC where a section of agitated voters after failing to present necessary documents for identification disrupted the polling process.

"In the second phase of elections we stuck to the laid down procedure for voters' identification in letter and spirit that caught some of the voters by surprise," Prakash said. Re-polling has been ordered in a polling station under Tamulpur LAC where miscreants disrupted polling by causing damage to the EMV.

In rest of the state re-polling will be held in five polling stations in Abhayapuri, south LAC, and one polling station each in LACs at Sootea, Nalbari, Barpeta, Baghbor, Sarbhog and another place.

The EC's pilot project to provide EVM with Braille signage features at a polling station in Barhampur LAC to help visually challenged voters to cast their votes without assistance from a companion was successful on Monday as it facilitated 32 visually challenged persons to cast votes on their own. It was for the first time such a special EVM for the visually challenged was used in Assam.

The CEO put the polling percentage for second phase at 78 per cent. In the second phase highest 87 per cent polling was recorded at Mankachar LAC and lowest 70 per cent at Patacharkuchi LAC.
