The Congressman from Vidarbha took a big gamble by contesting from a BJP stronghold, Nagpur (West).
His career was already in the doldrums -- he had to resign as state Congress chief (for the loss in the Lok Sabha election), from the ministry (over Vidarbha) -- and now this defeat.

When the initial trends showed that he was leading, Deshmukh went so far as to tell journalists that he was a contender for the chief minister's post.

What now, sir?
