'How will voting matter to us?'
NAME: The Borkes, Mumbai

They operate out of a space of three feet by six in Mumbai. The Borkes -- mother and son -- are cobblers and earn Rs 30 per day.

Today, Jambai Bajirao Borke's brother and wife are visiting from Ahmednagar and her granddaughter is there for the day too. They squat in front of the shop as son Subchar Lal, 17, mends leather soles.

Questions about whom they are going to vote for irritates them.

Not because they do not have voting cards.

Not because they were unable to register themselves to vote.

They feel it is a stupid question because they have no intention of voting.

"Why should we vote? What for? How will voting matter to us? What does the government ever do for us except break down our stall and slap us with fines?" asks Jambai in disgust. "The last time I voted was for Indira Gandhi. I have not voted since then."

Jambai's brother also does not plan to vote.

For the Borkes anything to do with the government is bad news. Mother and son have been barely eking out a living ever since Jambai's husband, a muncipality worker, died of a heart attack 18 months ago. Subchar Lal never went to school and now makes a meagre living as a shoemaker.
