Uttar Pradesh Governor Vishnukant Shastri said on Thursday that he was hopeful of resolving the political tangle in the state within five days.
After a thirty-minute meeting with caretaker Chief Minister Rajnath Singh, the governor told reporters that he had asked Singh to furnish his party's stand on the issue in writing.
The Bharatiya Janata Party had earlier stated that it would sit in the opposition and not support any party to form a government in the state.
Shastri disclosed that he had received a letter from the Bahujan Samaj Party that it was unwilling to support any party, particularly the Samajwadi Party, in its attempt to form a government.
The letter was sent by Mayawati's personal assistant. "But I will have to meet her in person to arrive at a decision," he said.
"I will also ask other parties' leaders, who will be meeting me in a day or two, to place their views in writing," Shastri said. "I am trying to contact Ms Mayawati (BSP) and Sriprakash Jaiswal (Congress) and hope to meet them soon."
Insisting that the Samajwadi Party should give him a list of MLAs supporting it to form a stable government, the governor said: "I will again meet the SP leaders after the first round of talks with all parties."
Rajnath Singh told reporters that he had asked the governor to relieve him of the responsibility of caretaker chief minister as the party had already decided to sit in the opposition.
