Mayawati elected BSP Legislature
Party leader

Election 2002 Mayawati was on Thursday elected leader of the BSP Legislature Party in Uttar Pradesh and said she would, in due course, stake claim for the formation of a government in the state.

"We are keeping a strict watch on the political developments in the state. I will inform you when I am going to meet the UP governor (Vishnukant Shastri) to stake my claim," she told reporters in New Delhi.

All the 98 party MLAs were present at the time of the election. They were brought to the venue -- the Indian Social Institute -- amid tight security.

Mayawati dismissed reports that the BSP was divided on the issue of forming a post-poll coalition with the Bharatiya Janata Party.

The former chief minister declined to divulge if the BSP was in touch with the BJP and other political parties to muster additional support saying, "It would be disclosed at an appropriate time."
