SPF strength rises to 35 in Manipur assembly

Election 2002

The strength of Congress-led Secular Progressive Front on Thursday rose to 35 in the 60-member Manipur assembly following the election of Congress and Manipur State Congress Party candidates from Singhat and Tipamimukh constituencies.

The party-wise break up of the SPF is now Congress - 20, MSCP - 7, CPI - 5 and NCP 3, SPF sources said, adding it now commanded simple majority in the state assembly.

SPF and Congress Legislature Party leader Okram Ibobi Singh had called on Governor Ved Marwah on Wednesday and staked claim to form the ministry in the state.

The strength of other parties are: BJP (4), Federal Party of Manipur (13), Manipur National Conference (1), Manipur People' Party (2), Democratic Revolutionary People's Front (2) and Samata Party (3).
