Rawat's supporters protest against Tiwari

Election 2002 Congress workers blocked the movement of traffic and burnt effigies of senior politician Narain Dutt Tiwari, who was chosen by party president Sonia Gandhi to be the chief minister of Uttaranchal.

The pressure tactics seemed to have worked as Sonia Gandhi invited state PCC chief Harish Rawat for consultations.

Shouting slogans against Tiwari, the workers put up roadblocks on the posh Rajpur Road in front of the Congress headquarters in Dehradun as soon as news spread that Tiwari would become chief minister of the new state's first elected government.

The protestors shouted 'Harish Rawat zindabad (long live Harish Rawat)' and burnt Tiwari in effigy. Later, a handful of newly elected legislators joined the demonstrators.

The party workers wanted Rawat, who led the Congress to an impressive victory in the election, to be given the top slot.
