N D Tiwari to be Uttaranchal CM

Election 2002 Senior Congress leader N D Tiwari has been chosen to head the Uttaranchal government after being nominated on Wednesday as leader of the Congress Legislature Party by party president Sonia Gandhi, party sources said.

Tiwari is currently a member of the Lok Sabha and chairman of Parliament's Public Accounts Committee.

Newly elected Congress members of the Uttaranchal assembly had at a meeting at Dehra Dun on Monday authorised Sonia Gandhi to decide on the leadership issue.

The meeting was attended by AICC general secretaries Ghulam Nabi Azad and Ambika Soni.

After the meeting, Soni had stated that both she and Azad had met party MLAs separately to ascertain their views and had indicated that a non-MLA could also become the chief minister.
