SPF stakes claim to form government
in Manipur

Election 2002 The Secular Progressive Front and Congress Legislature Party leader Okram Ibobi Singh on Wednesday called on Governor Ved Marwah and staked claim to form the next government in Manipur, sources said.

Singh, accompanied by other leaders of the SPF, submitted a list of 33 supporters and urged the governor to invite him to form the government, the sources said

The Congress leader was likely to be invited after the declaration of results in Singha and Tipaimukh constituencies on Thursday, they said.

Those who accompanied Singh included Congress Rajya Sabha member Angou Singh, Communist Party of India state secretary Parijat Singh, CPI leader M Ibohal, Nationalist Congress Party state unit president S Tiken Singh and its senior leader Ch Doungel.

Earlier, Manipur State Congress Party president Chaoba Singh called on the governor and informed him about his party's support to the newly formed front, the sources said.

SPF sources claimed that Federal Party of Manipur wanted to have an alliance with them, but their proposal was not accepted.

The Congress (19), MSCP (6), CPI (5) and NCP (3) had formed the SPF on Tuesday.
