Rawat strong contender for CM's post

Election 2002

Uttaranchal Congress chief Harish Rawat has emerged as a strong contender for the chief minister's post.

A day after the newly elected MLAs of the party authorised Sonia Gandhi to chose the new CLP leader, All India Congress Committee general secretaries Gulam Nabi Azad and Ambika Soni on Tuesday submitted their report to the party high command in New Delhi.

AICC secretary Satpal Maharaj is also lobbying for the top post claiming support of over a dozen MLAs.

One thing that can go against Maharaj is that he had forced the party high command to change the final list of candidates for the assembly polls by resigning from the party.

"The party could have performed better had Maharaj not forced the high command to change the list," a senior party leader said.

Others in race for chief ministerial post include senior party leaders Indira Hridayesh and Vijay Bahugana.
