Raja Bhaiya's fate hangs in the balance

Election 2002

Sharat Pradhan in Lucknow

The political fate of Raghuraj Pratap Singh, better known as Raja Bhaiya, will hang in the balance for a few days more on account of the suspension of counting in the Kunda and Bihar assembly constituencies in eastern Uttar Pradesh, following complaints of large-scale rigging.

Whether the election in these two constituencies would be countermanded or not will be known only after Election Commission Secretary K J Rao submits the final report of his assessment of the situation there.

The Election Commission has now sought some more documents from the two constituencies where counting was suspended on Sunday morning.

While Raja Bhaiya himself contested from Kunda, he fielded one of his henchmen as an independent candidate from Bihar.
