Mulayam elected leader of SP legislature party, Rajnath Singh of BJP

Election 2002

The newly-elected Samajwadi Party legislators of the Uttar Pradesh assembly on Tuesday elected Mulayam Singh Yadav as their leader at a meeting in Lucknow.

Yadav, who presided over the meeting, is likely to meet Governor Vishnu Kant Shastri in the evening to stake his claim for forming the government in the state.

The Samajwadi Party has emerged as the single largest party with 143 members in a House of 403. It also claims the support of independent members and other small groups to complete the requisite tally.

Meanwhile, Rajnath Singh was elected as the leader of the Uttar Pradesh BJP legislature party.

Singh's name was proposed by senior party leader Lalji Tandon and seconded by Harish Chandra Srivastava.

The meeting of the newly elected party legislators was presided over by the former BJP national president Kushabhau Thakre.
