A day after emerging victorious in the assembly election in Uttaranchal, the Congress Legislature Party on Monday authorised party president Sonia Gandhi to decide on the chief minister.
The front-runner for the post is state party unit chief Harish Rawat, though he did not contest the just-concluded assembly poll.
After an hour-long meeting in Dehra Dun, newly-elected Congress legislators adopted a resolution authorising Sonia Gandhi to decide the new leader.
Senior leader Indira Hridayesh moved the resolution, which was seconded by Amrita Rawat and Pritam Singh.
AICC general secretaries Ghulam Nabi Azad and Ambika Soni attended the meeting as the party's central observers.
Briefing newspersons after the meeting, the two leaders said they would be meeting the Congress chief in Delhi to brief her about the decision of the party MLAs.
Stating that there were no differences among the MLAs over the choice of the new leader, Soni said Gandhi would consult senior party leaders, including N D Tewari, before taking a decision.
