Uttaranchal: Vanquished UKD candidate's wife commits suicide

Election 2002 Shocked over the defeat of her husband in the Uttaranchal assembly election, wife of Uttarakhand Kranti Dal president Diwakar Bhatt allegedly committed suicide, police said.

Indu Bhatt (50), who was watching the telecast of the result of the assembly poll on television in her home at Hardwar on Sunday, could not bear the shock of her husband's defeat from Devprayag constituency in Tehri district and consumed some poisonous substance, Hardwar Superintendent of Police S S Negi said on Monday.

Bhatt was immediately rushed to a hospital where she died late in the evening. Her family members had earlier claimed that she died of a heart attack.

Congress candidate Mantri Prasad Naithani has won the Devprayag seat.
