Cong does not rule out non-MLA becoming Uttaranchal CM

Election 2002 The Congress high command on Monday did not rule out the possibility of a non-MLA becoming the next chief minister of Uttaranchal.

"I cannot foreclose the prerogative of the MLAs," AICC general secretary Ambika Soni said shortly before she left Delhi for Dehra Dun along with another general secretary Ghulam Nabi Azad as central observers for the election of the new CLP leader scheduled later for Monday.

Soni's remarks assume significance as state party unit president Harish Rawat, a front-runner for the top slot, is not an MLA.

Soni said that she and Azad were going to Uttaranchal with an 'open mind' and they would be meeting all party MLAs to ascertain their views. "We will also be in constant touch with the central leadership," she said.
