Mulayam will stake claim on Tue: Surjeet

Election 2002

Samajwadi Party leader Mulayam Singh Yadav will stake his claim to form the next government in Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday, CPI-M General Secretary Harkishan Singh Surjeet said.

"There has been a tradition to invite the single largest party to form the government. The Samajwadi Party president will stake his claim to form the government when he meets the governor in Lucknow," Singh told reporters at his residence.

Asked how the SP, with just 147 MLAs in the 403-member state assembly, could hope to form the government, the CPM leader said: "Just wait and watch."

He reminded the reporters about the decision of the Bharatiya Janata Party parliamentary board to sit in the opposition in UP, Uttaranchal and Punjab.
