Badal elected SAD legislature party leader

Election 2002

Shiromani Akali Dal president Parkash Singh Badal was on Monday unanimously elected as the leader of its legislature party in Punjab.

"The meeting, attended by all the 41 MLAs of the party, decided not to make attempts to form government and favoured to play the role of opposition in the assembly," party general secretary Kanwaljit Singh said.

He said the party might consider the suggestion to bring back six rebels, who have won as independents, into the party fold so as to strengthen the opposition.

Singh said the focus of the party would be to corner the Congress in the coming budget session of the assembly.

He claimed that the Congress government in the state would be 'short lived' due to 'factionalism' within the Congress on the issue of leadership.

Meanwhile, Punjab Bharatiya Janata Party chief Brij Lal Rinwa said that both the SAD and the BJP were 'jointly responsible' for the poor performance of the combine in the elections.
