Senior Congress party leader Rajinder Kaur Bhattal, one of the contenders for the post of chief ministership in Punjab, on Monday said she would not stake claim for the leadership of the Congress Legislature Party.
"I will not stake my claim for the post of chief minister. I will abide by any decision taken by the high command in this regard," Bhattal, a former chief minister, told reporters during a lunch hosted by Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh in Chandigarh.
Singh is one of the frontrunners to head the CLP, which is meeting on Tuesday in the presence of senior Congress leaders.
Bhattal, however, exuded confidence that the high command will take an 'appropriate decision' on choosing a candidate for the chief minister.
Bhattal, who got re-elected from her Lehra Gagga assembly seat, said, "We in the Congress are not fighting over the chair. There is no question of infighting."
However, in reply to a question whether anything less than chief minister's post was acceptable to her, she said, "I will not accept any post of lower level."
"But I am confident that the high command will make the right choice," she said.
Bhattal, who is also facing a corruption case against her in a Bhatinda court, said that she would raise the issue of 'one man one post' at an appropriate time at the party forum.
