Beant's son, daughter make it to Punjab assembly

Election 2002

The son and daughter of assassinated Punjab chief minister Beant Singh on Sunday made it to the Punjab assembly. They got elected from Payal and Jalandhar Cantt constituencies respectively.

Beant's son Tej Parkash Singh, who in 1997 won from Jalandhar Cantt, this time shifted to his father's traditional constituency Payal. He fought on a Congress ticket and defeated Jagjiwan Pal Singh of the Shiromani Akali Dal by 7,061 votes.

His sister Gurkanwal Kaur, who contested as a Congress nominee from Jalandhar Cantt, defeated her nearest rival Paramjit Singh of the SAD by 11,500 votes.

In 1999, Sadhu Singh of the SAD had won the Payal seat.
