The Congress on Sunday got off to a fine start in Manipur by winning 11 out of the 31 seats declared so far, while the Manipur National Congress suffered a jolt when its president and former chief minister Nipamacha Singh lost.
The Federal Party of Manipur with seven seats was a close second, followed by the Bharatiya Janata Party and Manipur State Congress Party, which won three seats each in the 60-member house.
While the Manipur People's Party and Nationalist Congress Party secured two seats each, the MNC, Samata Party and the Communist Party of India bagged one seat each.
Nipamacha Singh lost to MSCP nominee Y Mani Singh.
Winners from the Congress included former tribal development minister Ngamthan Haokip, former works minister Th Devendra Singh, Brajabidhu Singh, Maniruddin Sheikh and W Leima Devi.
Former chief minister Radhabinod Koijam of the Samata Party suffered defeat at the hands of BJP state unit chief Meinam Bhorot, who won by over 1000 votes.
FPM winners were former ministers N Bihari Singh, Tomba Singh, N Biren, L Ibomcha Singh, Salam Gopal Singh and Salam Ibohal, who defeated MSCP candidate Haobijam Manisana by just 10 votes.
For the BJP, the star winner was former chief minister R K Dorendra Singh, who won from the Yaiskul assembly seat, defeating his nearest rival E Kunjeswar Singh of the Congress by 1144 votes.
Other prominent winners were Manipur People's Party president O Joy Singh and former revenue minister Y Erabot of the Manipur State Congress Party.
