Counting of votes for assembly polls
to be taken up tomorrow

Election 2002

Counting of ballots for assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Uttaranchal and Manipur will be taken up on Sunday amidst tight security.

The results will decide the electoral fortunes of 2,500 candidates, including three chief ministers -- Rajnath Singh (UP), Parkash Singh Badal (Punjab) and Bhagat Singh Koshiyari (Uttaranchal).

Among other candidates whose electoral fate will be known on Sunday are former chief ministers Mayawati (UP), Kalyan Singh (UP), Rajinder Kaur Bhattal (Punjab) and W Nipamacha Singh, Radhabinod Koijam and R K Dorendra Singh (all Manipur).

Counting of votes will also be taken up for bypolls in seven Lok Sabha and six assembly constituencies to decide the electoral fortunes of All India Anna DMK chief J Jayalalithaa (Andipatti), Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi (Rajkot II), former chief minister H D Deve Gowda (Kanakpura Lok Sabha) and son of late Congress leader Madhavrao Scindia, Jyotiraditya Scindia (Guna Lok Sabha).

Results of Punjab assembly polls are expected to be out within two to three hours of the start of the counting.

Trends for the 403 seats in UP would be known by afternoon and all results are expected to be out by night.
