Militants prevent campaigning in Manipur

Election 2002

Suspected militants prevented campaigning for the second phase of Manipur assembly polls in Ukhrul district and pushed down two vehicles from hilltop, official sources said on Tuesday.

The militants attacked Congress workers at Sangching village under Ukhrul assembly constituency on February 17 and pushed their vehicle down the hill, the sources said.

In a separate incident at Lunghar village in the same constituency on Monday night, unidentified militants attacked Congress workers campaigning for former forest minister A S Arthur and damaged their car, the sources said.

The second phase of elections are scheduled for Thursday.

Police said security reinforcements have been rushed to the district.

Pamphlets have been circulated at Ukhrul district headquarters by an organisation called the Naga Youth Ceasefire Support Group, Ukhrul Unit, asking people not to support the Congress candidates in the district, the sources said.

Former Manipur chief minister and senior Congress leader Rishang Keishing is contesting from Phungyar assembly constituency, they said.

One company of the Central Reserve Police Force has been rushed to Phungyar to help maintain order during the polling.
