BJP, Congress birds of a feather, says Surjeet

Communist Party of India (Marxist) general secretary Harkishan Singh Surjeet today held the Congress responsible for the growth of the Bharatiya Janata Party in the country and stressed the need for the formation of a government by a third front comprising the left and secular forces.

Addressing an election rally of the ruling Left Democratic Front in Kochi, Surjeet said both the BJP and the Congress were parties of the landlords and cared little for the welfare of the downtrodden. Denying reports that his party had allied with the Congress in Tamil Nadu, Surjeet said it had consistently fought the Congress and the BJP and stood for a third alternative comprising the left and secular forces which, he said would become a reality after the current Lok Sabha elections.

Stating that the 13-month rule of the BJP-led government was a miserable failure, Surjeet said the Kargil conflict could have been averted if the government had been vigilant and taken timely action on intelligence reports about the infiltration. Surjeet, who is on a three-day election tour of Kerala, later left for Chalakudi where he would address a LDF rally in the afternoon.
