BJP-Sena claims backing of 140 MLAs

The Shiv Sena-Bharatiya Janata Party combine today handed over to Governor P C Alexander a list of 136 MLAs and submitted that four more members had extended their oral support to the alliance.

With this, the alliance's tally has gone up to 140, which is just five short of the magic mark of 145.

They also claimed that six more MLAs were likely to extend their support to the alliance government on the floor of the house.

However, they did not disclose the names of any party or individuals who were supporting them to form the government.

"We have submitted the list to the governor and at this moment I don't feel it is appropriate to disclose the names of the individuals and the parties which are supporting us," said Chief Minister Narayan Rane.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra Governor P C Alexander has extended the deadline for the Congress to submit its list of legislators.

The Congress now has time till 1930 hours.

It would be interesting to see if anybody from the Nationalist Congress Party would accompany the Congress delegation for the 1930 hours appointment.

When reports last came in the Congress and the NCP were deadlocked over the speaker post.
