Kith and kin battle for mantle

In Andhra Pradesh several family members -- bitterly divided -- of late chief minister and Telugu Desam Party founder N T Rama Rao contested the assembly elections.

Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, NTR's son-in-law, has lead his party to a resounding victory while NTR's widow Lakshmi Parvathi and his son N Harikrishna, who lead rival TDP outfits, were rejected by the electorate in their bid to capture power.

However, Naidu's brother Ramamurthy Naidu tasted defeat in Chandragiri.

Karnataka too had its quota of winners and losers under this category. Samata Party leader George Fernandes' brother and trade union leader Michael Fernandes (Janata Dal-United) lost to former railway minister Jaffer Sharief in Bangalore North.

While Sharief won for a seventh term, his son-in-law Syed Yasin also romped home in the Raichur assembly constituency.

Sons of two former chief ministers are entering the assembly in Karnataka. They are Dinesh Gundu Rao, son of the late R Gundu Rao, and Kailashnath Patil, son of late chief minister Veerendra Patil.

In Tamil Nadu, Murasoli Maran, former Union minister and nephew of Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, made it for the third consecutive term from Madras Central. T T V Dinakaran, a nephew of All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam chief J Jayalalitha's close friend Sasikala, won from Periyakulam.
