Indian players suffer fall in rankings after losing Auckland Test

India players paid for their under-performance in the opening Test against New Zealand in Auckland.

The result led to a fall in the  ICC rankings for most players, with captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni suffering the worst fall among his teammates.

Dhoni fell five rungs to the 33rd spot in the rankings among batsmen.

Meanwhile, Cheteshwar Pujara and R Ashwin managed to keep their places inside the top-10 of the rankings. Both players dropped a spot each in the batting and bowling charts, respectively.

While Pujara was placed sixth in the batting list, Ashwin was eighth among the bowlers after the opening Test against New Zealand.

Among the bowlers, Pragyan Ojha was the next best-placed Indian after Ashwin at 11th, even though he slipped two positions.

Pace spearhead Zaheer Khan was static at 22nd in the list.

Among other Indian batsmen, Virat Kohli remained steady at the 11th spot.

The only player to have gained in the rankings is Rohit Sharma -- a centurion in the Auckland Test -- who climbed six rungs to be joint 36th.

There was also drastic shuffle in the rankings table for the victorious New Zealand players.

Kane Williamson and Brendon McCullum, centurions in the 1st Test in Auckland, made the cut into the top-20 among batsmen.

Williamson, who stroked 113 in the first innings, jumped four places to a career-high of 19th.

McCullum jumped 15 places to return to the top-20 following his knock of 224. McCullum now sits in 20th spot in the rankings table.

Ross Taylor was the only downer, falling to fifth in the latest rankings.

Meanwhile, New Zealand's Trent Boult climbed three places to a career-best seventh in the rankings for Test bowlers, following his match haul of six for 124. Boult's pace partner, Tim Southee made it to the top 10 for the first time in his career. Southee, up four spots, now sits in 10th place on the table.

Elsewhere, Kumar Sangakkara's historic effort of 424 runs in the second and final Test in Chittagong against Bangladesh saw him jump five places to second in the rankings for Test batsmen.

Sangakkara rewrote the history books with his knocks of 319 and 105 in both innings of the Chittagong Test, thus becoming only the second player in history to score a triple hundred and hundred in the same Test. Overall, he became the fourth man in history to score 400 runs in one Test.

Sangakkara, named Player of the Match and Player of the Series, gained 58 ratings points for his effort. He is now three ratings points ahead of third-ranked Shivnarine Chanderpaul, and 33 behind No 1 ranked AB de Villiers.
