Four straight chances to the same position. Three dropped. One taken.

All the chances involving the same fielder; for that matter, the same bowler.

The Indian Premier League match between Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings at the Wankhede stadium on Sunday had a weird occurence.

In what was an unprecedented instance in cricketing history, Kieron Pollard was guilty of dropping three straight chances at point before making amends by catching the ball on the fourth attempt.

The first chance, off the fourth delivery of Mitchell Johnson's opening over, was the toughest of the lot. Even as Michael Hussey cut the ball hard it went off the West Indies player's palm for a boundary.

Hussey cut the fifth delivery straight to Pollard, and definitely not as firmly as the earlier one.

The ball was waist high.

Pollard was perfectly positioned, but couldn't hold on to the ball.

The last ball of Johnson's over was short and wide, and Hussey hit it exactly in the same way he hit the fifth delivery.

The ball went straight through Pollard's fingers and hit his nose.

The Australian quick was left frustrated even as the West Indies player went off the field.

Pollard was back on the field before Johnson's second over.

The Australian cleaned up Murali Vijay with his first delivery. His first to Suresh Raina was angled in, forcing the batsman to dig it out.

On this occasion the West Indies player dived forward and took a clean catch, the television replays confirming the same.

Pollard had got it right on the fourth attempt. Johnson was lucky with the fourth chance!

But when the Australian returned to bowl in the 14th over, Pollard was guilty of dropping Ravindra Jadeja, at long-on. However, to be fair, it was a difficult chance and a good attempt.
