Left-arm pacer Dirk Nannes gave Chennai the perfect start, getting the big wicket of Sachin Tendulkar for a first ball duck in the fifth ball of the first over.

Tendulkar was dismissed leg before wicket although replays showed he was unlucky to be given out as the ball pitched on and around the leg stump and looked to be sliding down.

Ricky Ponting was a bit early into his pull shot and the leading edge was taken by R Ashwin at first slip. It was a big wicket for the 19-year-old UP paceman Ankit Rajpoot to start off.

Mumbai were struggling at 17 for two in the fourth over.

Rohit Sharma also failed to make an impression with the bat.

Rohit got an early lifeline when he was dropped by Rajpoot off Nannes on the fine leg boundary but he could not make most of the opportunity and was caught behind off Dwayne Bravo.

Kieron Pollard ensured Mumbai never lost the tempo despite losing wickets from the other end. Mumbai were struggling at 59 for four in the ninth over when Pollard came to the crease but he kept hitting boundaries at regular intervals to keep the runs coming at a good rate.

Dinesh Karthik played a good innings of 37 before he was trapped leg before wicket by Bravo.

West Indian cricketers Kieron Pollard and Dwayne Bravo had a heated exchanged of words out in the middle.

Mumbai kept losing wickets at regular intervals as Dwayne Smith holed out R Ashwin to Bravo at long-on.

Pollard smashed his way to 57 from 38 balls to lift Mumbai to a fighting total of 148 for six in their 20 overs.

Pollard's innings was studded with nine boundaries including five sixes and he single-handedly brought his side back in the match.

Mumbai scored 52 runs in the last five overs as Pollard and Harbhajan Singh shared an unbeaten 65-run stand for the seventh wicket. Harbhajan scored a run-a-ball 21.

Chennai Super Kings lost a couple of early wickets as their pacers Munaf Patel and Mitchell Johnson claimed a wicket each in their first spell.

Murali Vijay was bowled by Munaf for five, while Suresh Raina was caught by Ricky Ponting of Johnson for 10.

Veteran Michael Hussey made 20 before he tried to slog sweep Harbhajan Singh but missed and was bowled to leave Chennai in trouble at 42 for three in the eighth over.

Suresh Raina's wicket was set up beautifully by left-armer Johnson, who first softened with a short delivery which was fended off somehow.

The next ball was full and quick which Raina inside edged on to his pads and was caught on the off-side by Ponting.

Dwayne Bravo also didn't make much contribution with the bat and was caught by wicketkeeper Karthik for 10.

Captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni led the fightback for Chennai with a quickfire half-century.

He blasted 51 from a mere 26 balls before he was dismissed in the final over of the innings. Chennai needed 12 from five balls as Dhoni tried to hit a big shot on the leg side but was brilliantly caught by Pollard on the ropes.

Chennai finished on 139 for nine in their 20 overs to lose by nine runs. Munaf was the most successful bowler, taking three for 29 in four overs, while Harbhajan and Pragyan Ojha took two wickets apiece.

Mumbai Indians registered their first victory in the tournament, having lost to Royal Challengers Bangalore in their opening encounter.
