S Sreesanth was included in India's World Cup squad after fellow-pacer Praveen Kumar was ruled out of the tournament because of an injury.
"The All-India Senior Selection Committee has picked S Sreesanth as Praveen Kumar's replacement in the Indian team for the tournament. The ICC has confirmed that Praveen Kumar can be replaced in the squad by S. Sreesanth," read a statement from Board of Control for Cricket in India secretary N Srinivasan on Tuesday.
The Kerala pacer was put through a fitness test at the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore on Monday afternoon, after which the BCCI forwarded his name to the ICC as a replacement for Praveen, who failed to clear his fitness test.
Praveen failed to recover from the elbow injury that he sustained during the tour to South Africa last month. He went to UK for a couple of days for further treatment but the reports of his progress were not encouraging, forcing India to make the change.
The World Cup begins on February 19, with India taking on Bangladesh in the opener in Dhaka.
