Australian Test opener Phil Hughes believes that fellow New South Wales cricketer David Warner will make the grade in the longer format of the game sooner than later.
Hughes, who earned a recall to the Aussie batting line-up after the controversial dumping of Simon Katich and his own impressive showing in Zimbabwe, said he had no doubt that Warner has the ability to master the five-day format.
"For sure. I was fortunate enough to open with him (in Zimbabwe) and we had a few good partnerships," Hughes told Fox Sports News.
"I know he has this tag about the shorter form of the game but Dave definitely has the potential to play in the longer form of the game," he added.
Hughes's endorsement added further weight to the comments of batting great and Fox Sports cricket commentator Mark Waugh, who said the explosive left-hander could easily "jump the queue" into the Test side.
Warner has already represented his country at one-day and Twenty20 level, but improved his resume by making 152, 48 and 82 in two separate two-day games against a Zimbabwe XI.
He clinched man of the series honours with a first-class career-best 211 in the final four-day game of the tour.
Warner said: "My aspirations are to get the baggy green and at the moment I'm going the right way about it. I'll bat at the top of the order (for New South Wales in the Sheffield Shield), that's where I want to bat. If I have to shift down the order for some reason I'm happy to do that as well."
