Heavy rain that lashed London on Thursday night continued through Friday morning, preventing a prompt start to the day's proceedings.
Electing to bat first, England were 268 for four wickets at stumps on Thursday after bad light forced an early end to the day's proceedings.
Andrew Strauss top-scored for the hosts, falling just four runs short of a hundred, while skipper Michael Vaughan made 79.
For India, Anil Kumble took two wickets, conceding 56 runs in 22 overs. R P Singh and Sourav Ganguly also chipped in with a wicket apiece.
