We won't be overawed by Aussies: Trescothick

England will not be overawed by Australia's reputation when the teams meet in the triangular one-day series, according to opening batsman Marcus Trescothick.

The left-hander will be appearing in his 100th one-dayer when the hosts take on Bangladesh at The Oval in Thursday's tournament opener.

He said England had gained in confidence after rising up the world rankings and warmed up for the event by crushing the world champions in their inaugural Twenty20 meeting on Monday.

"Everybody has been a little bit in awe of their team (Australia). We have gained confidence to stand up, be proud of what we have done and compete against the best team in the world," Trescothick told a news conference at the ground.

Australia's first game will be against Bangladesh in Cardiff on Saturday before they take on England at Bristol on Sunday. Each team will play six group matches before the final at Lord's on July 2.

Michael Vaughan's team also beat the Australians in their last one-day meeting, in the ICC Champions Trophy semi-finals last year, following a run of 14 defeats in a row.

Trescothick, however, said it was England's fine test form which had helped the team believe in themselves.

"The most important thing is not the fact that we have beaten them in two one-day games but how we have done over the last 18 months," he said.

"We have built a unity and team spirit as well as putting in extra work and extra disciplines in our team that will stand us in more stead rather than two one-day games."

The Twenty20 win should be kept in context, he added. "We are definitely not going to sit back and think we have done the job. We are going to come back stronger at Bristol. It's important for us to start well."

Trescothick will become the 10th Englishman to play 100 one-day internationals. Of the current England team, only Darren Gough, with 147, has played more. The record of 170 was set by Alec Stewart.

"I never thought it would happen so quickly," he said. "I don't want to miss any games at all."

Trescothick, whose scoring rate of 85.59 is only bettered by Andrew Flintoff within the England team, averages 36.51 in one-dayers but surprisingly has only managed 25.50 in four games against Bangladesh.

He hit two big hundreds in the just-concluded test series against the Bangladeshis but his recent one-day form is suspect. He averaged just over 14 against South Africa in seven matches earlier this year in a series that England lost 4-1.

Bangladesh have never beaten England or Australia in one-day matches and have only scored 200 once in 10 attempts.

Coach Dav Whatmore, however, said they would have a better chance in the one-day tournament than they had in the tests against England, which ended in a 2-0 thrashing.

"In the shorter version the game can swing around a little bit...one of our objectives is to have it swing our way," he said.
