The selectors made a major move as Rohit Sharma was removed as India's ODI captain and was replaced by the young Shubman Gill, who impressed as the Test captain during the tour of England recently, for the upcoming tour of Australia.
Gill, 26, was appointed as India's captain for the three-match ODI series in Australia later this month, while veterans Rohit and Virat Kohli were also retained in the 50-overs squad, the BCCI announced on Saturday.
"It is very difficult to have three different captains for three formats. In terms of not just the selectors, but more importantly, even for the coach, to plan with three different people is never easy," chief selector Ajit Agarkar said in Ahmedabad.
On being asked if it was a difficult decision to remove Rohit as the ODI captain, having led India to the ICC Champions Trophy in March, Agarkar replied: "Even if he had not won the Champions Trophy it would have been a difficult decision because of how good he has been for India. But you have got to sometimes look at what's coming forward, where you stand as a team and eventually look at what's in the best interest of the team."
Shreyas Iyer was named as the vice-captain of the ODI team.
K L Rahul was named as the wicketkeeper along with Dhruv Jurel, who earned his maiden call up to the ODI team in place of Samson as the second wicket-keeper.
Yashasvi Jaiswal was also named in the ODI team, with all-rounders Nitish Kumar Reddy replacing Hardik Pandya as the seam bowling all-rounder in both the ODI and T20I teams.
Rohit had led India to the ICC Champions Trophy title in March and the T20 World Cup title last year. Under him, India finished runners up in the 2023 ODI World Cup.
Suryakumar Yadav, despite struggling for runs, was retained as the T20 captain after recently leading India to the Asia Cup T20 title.
Among the bowlers, Jasprit Bumrah and Kuldeep Yadav, both of whom are playing in the ongoing West Indies Test series, were given a rest for the ODI series, but feature in the five-match T20I series starting on October 29.
Wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant was not available for selection after failing to recover from his injury sustained during the England series.
