Three early strikes by pacer Rohan Raje and a four-wicket haul by spinner Iqbal Abdullah helped hosts Mumbai restrict Railways to 201 on day one of the Group A Ranji Trophy Elite division match.
In reply, Mumbai scored 42 before losing opener Omkar Gurav, trapped by Railways skipper Murali Karthik for 18 on the last ball of the day. Sahil Kukreja was unbeaten on 21 when stumps were drawn for the day.
Justifying skipper Wasim Jaffer's decision to field first, Raje sent back M Suresh (1), S Bangar (4) and T P Singh (0) within the first eight overs to leave the visitors reeling at 16-3 at one stage. His figures at one stage read 4-3-4-3.
Abdullah then got into the act and cleaned up the lower order to ensure that the hosts, hunting for their first outright victory, took firm control of the proceedings.
It was left to young Prashant Awasthi (61) to stage the rescue act. Awasthi shared a 55-run stand with the experienced Yere Goud (37) for the fifth wicket and 42 runs for the sixth wicket with wicket-keeper Mahesh Rawat (13) to ensure some respectability to the Railways total.
Opener B V Cheluvuraj, too, contributed to the total with a useful 38.
For Mumbai, Raje and Abdullah ended with figures of 3-41 and 4-42. Off-spinner Ramesh Powar and medium-pacer Dhaval Kulkarni shared two and one wicket respectively.
The match began an hour late due to wet out field, caused by Monday's heavy rains.

Delhi bowl out Gujarat for 71
New Delhi: Delhi produced a sensational seam bowling display, dismissing Gujarat for a paltry 71 on the rain-affected first day of their Ranji Trophy Super League Group A match in New Delhi on Wednesday.
The pace trio of Pradeep Sangwan, Sumit Narwal and Pawan Suyal bundled out Gujarat in just 23.4 overs after the visitors opted to bat at the Ferozeshah Kotla Stadium.
Suyal claimed four for 27 while Sangwan and Narwal took three wickets apiece for 16 and 23 runs respectively.
Only three Gujarat batsmen could reach double figures with Niraj Patel (21) being the top-scorer.
The Gujarat batting collapsed like nine pins with the biggest partnership being the 14-run stand between Pratharesh Parmar (12) and Rohit Dahiya (12) for the sixth wicket.
In reply, Delhi were off to a sound start as they reached 39 for no loss in just nine overs before heavy rain and bad light forced the draw of early stumps.
Opener Shikhar Dhawan and Unmukt Chand were batting at 24 and 15 runs respectively.
Dhawan scored 20 out of his 24 runs from boundaries from the 26 deliveries he faced today while Chand hit three fours from 28 balls.

Bengal 257 for five against Assam
Kolkata: An unbroken 121-run stand between Laxmi Ratan Shukla and wicket-keeper Wriddhiman Saha took Bengal out of the woods as they reached 257 for five in their first innings on the first day of their Ranji Trophy Super League Group A match against Assam.
Put into bat at the Eden Gardens, Bengal were in trouble at 126 for five midway into the post-lunch session when captain Manoj Tiwary was dismissed for 50.
Shukla (batting 75) and Saha (batting 60) then took charge to guide Bengal to safety with an unbroken sixth-wicket stand of 121 runs from 39.5 overs as the home side reached 257 in 88 overs.
Shukla's 75, which he made from 130 balls, was studded with 13 fours while Saha hit a six and six fours in his 128-ball stay at the crease.
For Assam, Ranjitkumar Mali claimed two for 60 while Abu Nechim Ahmed, Dhiraj Goswami and Arlen Konwar scalped a wicket each.

Mukund, Arun Karthik guide TN to 242/2 against Saurashtra
Rajkot: Abhinav Mukund (102 not out) and K B Arun Karthik (107) struck classy centuries to guide Tamil Nadu to 242 for two against Saurasthra at stumps on day one of their Ranji Trophy Super League Group A match.
Mukund and Arun Karthik shared 194 runs for the second wicket before the latter fell prey to a run out.
Mukund faced 229 deliveries and struck 12 boundaries during his unbeaten innings, while Arun Karthik decorated his 179-ball knock with 13 fours and a six.
At stumps, S Badrinath was giving Mukund company at the crease on 18.
The Saurashtra bowlers toiled hard all throughout the day with only pacer Sandip Maniar (1/52) registering his name in the wicket list.
Opting to bat, Tamil Nadu did not have a great start to their innings as they lost opener Srikkanth Anirudha (2) early, bowled by Maniar at the team score of nine.
But after that Mukund and Arun Karthik batted flawlessly and mixed caution with aggression to take the visitors to 242 in 73 overs.

Himachal off to a strong start against Punjab
Dharamsala: Skipper Paras Dogra (65) and Vinit Indulkar (60) hit half-centuries as hosts Himachal Pradesh made a strong start to their Ranji Trophy Super League group B match against Punjab.
Dogra and Indulkar build on the good start provided by their openers to help the side reach 256 for four at stumps on day one of the contest as Punjab had a tough day at HPCA Stadium here.
The duo shared an 118-run stand after Bhavin Thakkar (38) and Sangram Singh (31) put on 77 for the first wicket.
Jaskaran broke the opening partnership by trapping Singh and soon Thakkar's run out left Dogra and Indulkar to steady the boat.
The duo did a wonderful job as they hit useful fifties at a good pace.
India discard Yuvraj Singh separated them by scalping Dogra and Manpreet Gony later removed Indulker for another LBW decision.
Dogra's 65 came off 96 balls with 11 fours while Indulkar took 122 balls for his 60, which had 10 hits to the fence.
Stumper Manvinder Bisla carried on the good work as he was unbeaten on 34 at stumps and giving him company was Mukesh Sharma (17).

Karnataka stuggle against Haryana
Rohtak: Veteran seamer Joginder Sharma utilised the windy conditions to perfection to help Haryana restrict Karnataka to 84 for three before heavy rains drew early curtains to the opening day's play in the rain-affected Ranji Trophy Super League Group B match.
Joginder scalped all the three Karnataka wickets that fell today, giving away just 30 runs from his 11 overs.
At stumps, Robin Uthappa was unbeaten on 36 while giving him company was young Manish Pandey on three.
Opting to bowl on overcast conditions, Joginder drew first blood for Haryana in the seventh over when he had Gautam Murlaidharen caught by Sunny Singh at the team score of 22.
Joginder then dismissed KB Pawan (10) leg-before-wicket in the 13th over with Karanataka scoreboard reading 30 before Ganesh Satish (17) and Uthappa stitched a 39-run stand to put the visitors back on track.
But just when it seemed the duo had put Karanataka back on track, Joginder struck again, dismissing Satish leg-before-wicket in the 27th over.
From there on, Uthappa and Pandey batted sensibly to take Karnataka to 84 for three in 30 overs before the sky opened up while the players were taking their lunch at the dressing room.
With the downpour showing no signs of relenting, the umpires were finally forced to call off the day's proceedings as the players remained indoors after the lunch.
Earlier, the match was halted for 21 minutes before the lunch due to bad light.
Yusuf, Munaf bundle out UP cheaply
Vadodara: Yusuf Pathan and Munaf Patel shared nine wickets between them as Baroda bundled out Uttar Pradesh for 190 and then reached 59 for one in their Ranji Trophy Super League match.
Yusuf (5/41) and Munaf (4/49) produced devastating bowling form to wreck havoc in their rival camp and helped Baroda to make a strong start on the first day.
At the close of the opening day's play, Murtuja Vahora (6) was giving company to Jaykishan Kolsawala (34) at the Motibag Ground here.
After winning the toss, Baroda skipper Pinal Shah elected to field and his bowlers responded by claiming four UP wickets -- Tanmay Srivastava, D P Rawat, E R Dwivedi and captain Mohammed Kaif -- at a total of 46 runs in 17.4 overs.
Three of these four wickets were captured by Patel.
Parvinder singh and Bhuvneshwar Kumar Singh then forged a 94-run 5th wicket partnership to take UP to 140 runs for the loss of five wickets.
Parvinder singh's knock of 85 runs included eight fours and two sixes while Bhuvneshwar's knock of 47 runs was studded with five fours.
After the lunch, Munaf Patel struck again and took the important wicket of Bhuvneshwar as UP innings suffered another collapse losing the remaining five wickets for just 50 runs, thanks to Yusuf Pathan, whose off-spin bowling played havoc.
In reply, Baroda started steadily as both their openers Connor Williams and Jaikishan Kolsawala scored 43 runs for the first wicket before the former was brilliantly run out by Piyush Chawla.
