Veteran Sunil Joshi spun a web around Orissa batsmen, taking five for 35 to restrict the visitors to 191 on the first day of their Ranji Trophy Super League match at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, in Bangalore on Wednesday.
In reply, Karnataka were 18 for two when stumps were drawn on the first day. Ganesh Satish survived a testing opening spell after Debasish Mohanty and Alok Sahoo removed K B Pawan and Lokesh Rahul in quick succession.
Earlier, after being put into bat, Orissa were off to a disastrous start losing openers Natraj Behera and Shiv Sundar Das within the first three overs. Both the openers, who got out to debutant Adithya Sagar, failed to open their wicket.
Niranjan Behera and Govind Podder steadied the innings with a 46-run partnership, before Joshi had Podder caught behind by Muralidharen Gautam, his first victim of the day.
Joshi then dismissed Rakesh Mohanty to leave the visitors reeling at 48 for four.
With Joshi leading by example and well assisted by Sagar and Sreenath Aravind, Orissa batsmen, with the exception of Niranjan Behera, failed to impress.
Behera top scored for Orissa with an unbeaten 83 off 235 balls. His knock was laced with 12 boundaries.

Dhawan shines for Himachal Pradesh
Pacer Rishi Dhawan shone with a five-wicket haul as Himachal Pradesh bundled out Uttar Pradesh for a paltry 197 in their first innings on the opening day of their Ranji Trophy Super League Group B match in Chennai.
Dhawan (5/80) ripped through Uttar Pradesh's batting as he claimed the wickets of Digvijay Singh (22), captain Mohammad Kaif (9), Bhuvneshwar Kumar (0) and Piyush Chawla (9), after the hosts were sent into bat by the visitors at the Green Park stadium.
Uttar Pradesh's batsmen found the going tough against the pace generated by the trio of Dhawan, Anurag Thakur (2/39) and Kuldeep Diwan (2/27), and were reduced to 125 for 6 in 50 overs.
Parvinder Singh (46) and Rudra Pratap Singh (47) made a late fightback but that was not enough as Uttar Pradesh folded for 197 in 76.4 overs.
While Parvinder struck 4 fours in his 119 balls stay, Singh's fighting knock contained 10 hits to the fence.
Singh was the last batsman to depart, becoming the second victim of Diwan.
For UP, opener Tanmay Srivastava (34) was the other notable contributor.
In reply, Himachal too found themselves in a spot of bother as they were reduced to nine for 2 in five overs at stumps.
Opener Bhavin Thakkar was out cheaply for 2 bowled by RP Singh while Gurvinder Singh failed to open his account and was dismissed by RP off his very next ball in the fifth over.
Day 1 of Mumbai-Assam tie washed out
Rain played spoilsport as play on day one of the Ranji Trophy Group A Elite division match between Mumbai and Assam in Mumbai was abandoned due to wet outfield.
The match was earlier scheduled to be hosted by the under-renovation Wankhede Stadium, before being shifted to Mumbai Cricket Association's ground at the Bandra-Kurla Complex.
Mumbai top Group A with 11 points from three matches, while Assam have six points from as many games.
Gujarat-Bengal first day's play called off due to rain
The first day's play of Ranji Trophy Group A Super League match between Gujarat and Bengal was called off without a ball being bowled due to rain in Ahmedabad.
The umpires RM Deshpande and SD Ranade inspected the ground four times in the day and decided to call off the day's play at 1600 hours IST. The toss is yet to be held.
Gujarat have collected nine points from one win and two draws while Bengal are on five from three draws.
Baroda 94-1 on rain-hit opening day
Jaykishan Kolsawala and Connor Williams shared an 80-run opening partnership as Baroda reached 94 for one against Punjab on the first day of their Ranji Trophy Super League Group B match in Vadodara.
Kolsawala slammed six boundaries in his 129-ball innings to give Baroda a positive start after Punjab skipper Pankaj Dharmani won the toss and decided to field at the Moti Bagh stadium.
Williams on 33 with three boundaries and KH Devdhar on 6 were at the crease at stumps.
For Punjab, Manpreet Singh Gony was the only wicket taker. The bulky pacer scalped the wicket of Kolsawala, giving away 23 runs in his nine overs.
Rain plays spoilsport in Chennai
Tamil Nadu were 26 for one as only eight overs were bowled on the opening day against Railways on the rain-hit first day of the Ranji Trophy Elite Group A match in Chennai.
The umpires, after inspected the outfield a few times, finally decided to commence play at 1630 hours.
Railways, who elected to field, struck an early blow when Tamil Nadu opener Anirudha Srikkanth (1) was dismissed in the second over by medium pacer J P Yadav.
At stumps, Abhinav Mukund (19) and K B Arun Karthik (5) were at the crease.
Delhi-Saurashtra match's opening day washed out
Rain played spoilsport as the opening day's play in the Ranji Trophy Super League Group A match between Delhi and Saurashtra was called off without a ball being bowled, in Rajkot.
Umpires CK Nandan and AM Saheba performed four inspection before calling off the day's play at the Khandheri Cricket Stadium.
The match is important for Saurashtra, who have just two points from three matches.
Delhi, too, did not have a great start to their Ranji season, but they recovered well and have seven points in their kitty now.
Neither teams could take part in the practice sessions on Tuesday due to incessant rains.
