India fast bowler Mohammed Shami has been paid a compensation of over Rs 2.2 crore last month for having missed the 2015 Indian Premier League season due to a knee injury despite which he played in the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India published the details of all payments above Rs. 25 lakh in June 2016 on its website bcci.tv under which it stated that Shami was paid Rs 2,23,12,500 for "Loss of pay for IPL season 2015 due to injury."
Shami played in the entire World Cup 2015 in Australia and New Zealand despite an injury as he claimed he did not want to disturb the winning momentum in the final stages of the showpiece event.
He was among the leading bowlers for the country in the 50-overs World Cup last year and played a crucial role in India reaching the semi-finals of the World Cup. In the World Cup, the pacer picked up 17 wickets in five games and was the fifth-best bowler in the competition.
The decision to play despite an injury cost him heavily as he was unable to play in the 2015 IPL season and underwent a surgery. He missed an entire year because of the injury and recently made a comeback to international cricket, for the tour of West Indies.
The BCCI compensated the 25-year-old Bengal paceman for his dedication to the country's cause.
Shami, who later suffered a hamstring injury when India visited Australia in January this year and missed the Asia Cup T20 championship, is currently in the West Indies as a member of the Virat Kohli-led squad that will feature in a four-Test rubber.
Shami had admitted last year that he knew that he had injured his knee but wanted to keep playing as he didn't want to disrupt the team's momentum during all-important World Cup.
"That landing spot was up and down. It resulted in swelling. It kept on getting worse, but in the end it came to a stage during the World Cup where I found the momentum and the team found the momentum, and we didn't want to lose that. When we came back from the World Cup, then we did proper tests and found there was a tear in the knee," he told ESPNCricinfo in June last year.
The 25-year-old player said that missing the eighth edition of the IPL for Delhi Daredevils last year was a frustrating experience for him.
"To watch all the players play the IPL and you are sitting at home and watching on TV. That is one of the most difficult things to do for a player. Yet you have to realise that injuries are a fact of a sportsman's life. You have to keep that in mind. It was tough, it is tough, and now I am just waiting to get back on to the field," he had said.
Among other details put up by the BCCI are amounts paid as match fees for officials for this year's IPL and the list includes former Test fast bowler Javagal Srinath (Rs 26 lakh) and ex-Kerala Ranji Trophy leg spinner K N Ananthapadmanabhan (Rs 26 lakh).
Several cricket associations affiliated to the BCCI, including permanent Test centres Mumbai CA, Cricket Association of Bengal and Tamil Nadu CA, have been given varying amounts exceeding Rs 25 lakh as their dues.
