Star batsman Virat Kohli was on Friday named India’s captain in the limited overs format, replacing Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who gave up the role earlier this week.
Kohli, who has been India’s Test skipper since December 2014, thus takes over the captaincy across all three formats.
Under Kohli's captaincy, India have been a dominating force in Test cricket, having recently thrashed England 4-0 to register their fifth series win in a row.
The 35-year-old Dhoni, under whom India had won two World Cups and a Champions Trophy title, on Wednesday relinquished the limited overs captaincy.
While expressing his desire to quit captaincy, Dhoni however conveyed to the selection committee that he will be available for selection as a wicketkeeper-batsman for the forthcoming series against England.
The first assignment for Kohi as the ODI captain will be the forthcoming five-match One-Day International series against England, starting in Pune, on January 15. The next two matches will be played in Cuttack (January 19) and Kolkata (January 22) followed by the three-match T20I series.
