Kings XI Punjab named former Australia wicketkeeper-batsman Adam Gilchrist as the team's captain for the fourth edition of the Indian Premier League, starting April 8.

The hard-hitting left-hander was the skipper of Deccan Chargers in the first three editions of the cash-rich Twenty20 tournament and even led the Hyderabad outfit to the title in IPL II in 2009.

"I am excited to play in the IPL again as part of Kings XI Punjab, one of the most passionate and dynamic teams of the IPL. The role of a captain is a challenging one and I hope that I can live up to the expectations and trust that the KXIP management has shown in me," Gilchrist said.

Col Arvinder Singh, Chief Operating Officer of Kings XI Punjab, while commenting on the development said, "Gilchrist is a record-breaking player and undoubtedly an asset to the newly-formed team. We believe that he is an excellent leader and a legend in his own right with the requisite expertise and experience to lead Kings XI Punjab on the path of victory this year."

Kings XI coach Michael Bevan, who played alongside Gilchrist for Australia, is hoping that the Punjab outfit's fortunes will change with a new captain.

"We at KXIP are looking forward to playing in the IPL this season with altogether a new set of players, led by an extremely aggressive and attacking captain. Gilchrist has got great leadership skills and yet is one of the most humble cricketers across the globe. I believe he has a lot to offer to the team both on and off the field," Bevan said.
