Former India left-arm spinner Sunil Joshi has been appointed Bangladesh's spin bowling coach on a short-term deal ahead of the Test series against Australia.

Sunil JoshiJoshi, who took 110 wickets for India in 15 Tests and 69 One-Day Internationals from 1996-2001, had already began working with the bowlers ahead of the first Test starting in Dhaka on Sunday, the Bangladesh Cricket Board told local media.

The BCB had hoped to appoint former Australia legspinner Stuart MacGill but talks failed to produce a deal.

Joshi's last coaching assignment was with the senior Assam team.

Bangladesh face Australia in a Test match for the first time since 2006. The second Test starts in Chittagong from September 4.

Coincidentally, Joshi was man-of-the-match during the first ever Test match played on Bangladesh soil back in 2000.

It was Sourav Ganguly's debut as Test captain and Joshi had scored 92 and taken eight wickets in the match. Both his batting and bowling figures were his best in his 15-Test career.

His domestic record is of legendary proportions, having taken 615 wickets from 160 first-class games.
