Debutant Mohammed Shami produced a devastating spell of reverse swing to finish with a match haul of nine wickets as India beat the West Indies by an innings and 51 runs in the first Test at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Friday.
Making his debut at his home ground, the Bengal pacer, who took 4 for 71 in the first innings, utilised the conditions well to generate reverse swing and claim five wickets for 47 runs in the second innings, for impressive match figures of 9 for 118.
Shami's effort is the second best by an Indian on debut, after Narendra Hirwani's 16 for 136 against the same opponents in Chennai way back in 1988.
