The cricketing world on Thursday gave Indian batsman Rohit Sharma's outstanding knock of 264 against Sri Lanka a standing ovation, with the Mumbai lad's innings propelling his team to a 153-run win.

Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who has been sidelined from the ongoing series, called Sharma's batting 'sheer class'.

"Very well batted Rohit. thats Rohit for everyone, sheer talent.Enjoy and Witness the class in action.," he tweeted.

Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma's coach Dinesh Lad, who was over the moon with his apprentice's thrilling performance, said that he is the happiest person in the world.

"This is an unbelievable victory. I cannot express my feeling. I am the happiest person on earth today," Lad told ANI.

Former Australian pace bowler Jason Gillispie seemed lost for words, and his tweet made that apparent.

" Rohit Sharma- WOW!!!!," he wrote.

At the same time, former India n captain Anil Kumble was pleased that Sharma was able to make such an impact in his comeback game.

"Record at Eden! Great knock @ImRo45! Take a bow! Made up for lost time! Batting at its best!#IndvsSL," he tweeted.

Sharma's record breaking innings came off just 173 deliveries and consisted of 33 fours and nine sixes. With this knock, he also became the only person to hit two double centuries in ODIs.

The first cricketer to get a double hundred in ODIs, Sachin Tendulkar, congratulated Rohit Sharma for becoming the first to achieve the feat twice.

Rohit smashed a 264-run knock against Sri Lanka in Kolkata on Thursday to not just become the highest run-getter in an ODI innings but also the first batsman to notch up two double hundreds.

In the process, he surpassed Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag, both of whom have got a double ton each.

"I didn't get to see his innings but getting another double ton is special and I feel very happy for Rohit. A perfect form of match practice and preparations before the Australian tour," Tendulkar said.

Rohit's match-winning knock eclipsed the 209 he made against Australia last year.

The right-hander struck 33 fours and 9 sixes during the knock, which is a record in ODIs, surpassing the 25 fours and 7 sixes by Sehwag during his knock of 219 against the West Indies in 2011.

Tendulkar had also recorded 25 fours during his double century -- 200 not out in 2010.
