Australian cricketer Mike Hussey would like to return and captain Western Australia when his international career is over, but the ageing Test batsman is adamant he does not yet know when that will be.

Ricky Ponting's retirement made Hussey, also 37, confront his own sporting mortality, but he still wants to compete in next year's Ashes and would like to finish his Test career at home.

He said that the Ashes is a huge carrot, no question, but it's dangerous to look too far ahead.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Australia will play back-to-back Ashes series in England then at home over the next 12 months.

Hussey has not shown his age this summer, with 675 runs in four Tests at an average of 88.20, the report said.

He has discussed with Justin Langer, the new WA coach, the possibility of eventually helping his home state recover from its array of problems.

The sudden departure of Ponting has made Hussey determined to enjoy the rest of his international career while it lasts, the report added.
