India still fourth

M J Manohar Rao and Srinivas Bhogle

Even a resounding 5-0 win against England at home has not helped India (58.85) climb in the Rediff ODI rankings. They stay fourth and that is because India had beaten England by a similar margin (6-1) when the English team last played in India.

Sri Lanka (46.90) defeated Zimbabwe 5-0 away. Even this too did not translate into any real gain because Sri Lanka always defeat Zimbabwe 5-0.

Australia (70.93) hold on to the top position, with New Zealand (63.16) and South Africa (61.54) behind them.

New Zealand are a bit of a puzzle; they play ODI cricket rather well, especially at home, but can't reproduce the same performance in Test matches. At home, New Zealand have humbled the mighty Australians 3-0 and the South Africans 5-1 during their most recent series encounters.

Table A shows the current ODI rankings.

The corresponding Reliance Mobile ICC ODI rankings (as on December 15, 2008) are Australia (131), South Africa (119), India (119), Pakistan (114), New Zealand (113), England (108), Sri Lanka (107), West Indies (91), Bangladesh (47) and Zimbabwe (13).

We must mention that the Rediff ODI Rankings are not as volatile as the official Reliance Mobile ODI Rankings, and look at a performance window of at least one year.

Details

The Rediff ODI rating, now published regularly over the last seven years, is a judicious combination of every team's weighted index (WI) and tournament index (TI).

The WI, based on the most recent ODI encounters between every pair of teams as shown in Table B, is essentially a weighted average that considers the 'opposition strength' (because wins against strong opponents must be rewarded more) and the 'home-away-neutral' factors (because teams usually win more at home, and lose more playing 'away').

The TI factors in a team's performance in tournaments and series (and thereby seeks to better reward wins in 'big' matches).
