How the ODI rankings work?

Sri Lanka slip to fourth place
M J Manohar Rao and Srinivas Bhogle
The Cherry Blossom Cup at Sharjah brought some lustre to Pakistan (40.38). Sri Lanka (46.19), however, failed to shine as they dropped to the fourth place in the Rediff ODI ratings.
South Africa (46.83) gain the third place as they begin their difficult climb back to the top of the ODI ladder.
Table A shows the Rediff ODI rankings as on April 11, 2003. Since the Rediff ODI index (ODI RBI) is a composite of two indices: the weighted index (WI) -- that considers the 'strength of the opposition' and the 'home-away' factor -- and the tournament index (TI) that rewards teams with a winning record in tournaments played during the last 12 months (the 'big match' performers), it gives a much better indication of the true current form of the top ODI-playing teams.

Pakistan (40.38) have gained, as have Zimbabwe (14.55) -- one cannot recall when Zimbabwe last made it to the final of a tournament featuring two higher-ranked teams! The ease with which Javed Miandad's boys won all their matches could point to a possible resurgence in Pakistan's fortunes. But then Pakistan always play ODI matches very well at Sharjah.
As always the ICC ODI ratings -- Aus (136), SA (123), Pak (111), SL (106), Ind (103), WI (99), NZ (98), Eng (98) and Zim (65) -- continue to puzzle. One is faintly amused to read ICC media handouts indicating how India could claim the fourth place if they win all their Dhaka games. Perhaps even the ICC is a trifle embarrassed that its ratings find it so hard to discover the simple truth -- that on current form, India are indeed the second best ODI team in the world.
Details
The weighted index (WI) is calculated based on the ODI scorecard that appears below as Table B. Details of the WI calculation appear elsewhere on Rediff.

We next present the details of how the tournament index (TI) is computed. The TI is based on a time 'window' spanning the past 12 and odd months (currently this window spans the period April 2002 to April 2003).
During the past 12 months there have been eight tournaments featuring three or more teams, including the 2003 World Cup (see Table C1) and 10 'tournaments' featuring only two teams (see Table C2).

Our next update will appear after the TVS Cup. Since Bangladesh do not figure in the top nine ODI teams, the Dhaka tournament would be equivalent to a three-match series between India and South Africa at a neutral venue. India should retain their second position irrespective of what happens at Dhaka.
