Sri Lanka looked jaded

M J Manohar Rao and Srinivas Bhogle

Sri Lanka (47.15) aren't the same team without Chaminda Vaas, Muttiah Muralitharan and Kumar Sangakkara.

Pakistan (41.43), on the other hand, looked rather good with a new captain, a more effervescent fielding side and Shahid Afridi playing on his sort of a pitch.

The relative positions in the Rediff ODI Rankings however remained unchanged after the Warid Cricket Series at Abu Dhabi.

Table A shows the current ODI rankings.

TABLE A: CURRENT ODI RANKINGS (as on May 24, 2007)
Team WI TI ODI RBI=
WI * 0.80 + TI * 0.20
Difference
18.5 -->24.5
Ranking
Australia 64.80 88.24 69.49 +0.36 1
South Africa 53.39 40.00 50.71 +0.35 2
Sri Lanka 50.34 34.38 47.15 -0.55 3
New Zealand 51.01 28.13 46.43 +0.08 4
Pakistan 47.88 15.63 41.43 +1.33 5
England 44.91 21.88 40.30 +0.36 6
India 43.28 15.79 37.78 +0.15 7
West Indies 36.68 29.41 35.23 -0.72 8
Bangladesh 12.03 18.75 13.37 -0.03 9
Zimbabwe 12.23 6.25 11.03 +0.07 10

The corresponding LG ICC ODI rankings (as on May 24, 2007) are Australia (130), South Africa (124), New Zealand (113), Pakistan (112), Sri Lanka (109), India (107), England (104), West Indies (99), Bangladesh (45) and Zimbabwe (22).

It is a surprise to see Sri Lanka already down to the fifth place in the ICC rankings; but then the ICC rankings can't distinguish between a World Cup final and a listless third ODI game at Abu Dhabi after the series is already decided.

Details

The Rediff ODI rating is obtained by judiciously combining every team's weighted index (WI) and tournament index (TI). Based on the past data, a reasonable ratio to combine the WI and TI appears to be 4:1.

The WI, based on the most recent ODI encounters between every pair of teams as shown in Table B, is essentially a weighted average that considers the 'opposition strength' (because wins against strong opponents must be rewarded more) and the 'home-away-neutral' factors (because, most teams win a lot of matches when they play at home, but lose many more in 'away' encounters).

The TI factors in a team's performance in tournaments and series (and thereby seeks to better reward wins in 'big' matches). The TI is currently based on a time 'window' spanning the period May 2006 to May 2007 (see Table C).
