Pakistan edge past West Indies

M J Manohar Rao and Srinivas Bhogle

West Indies (41.85) are beginning to lose ground in the Rediff ODI rankings after their 1-3 loss in the one-day series in Pakistan (43.58).

Pakistan climbed up one spot to fourth, while West Indies slipped to fifth.

South Africa (52.49) are still second, India (36.74) lie seventh and England (25.28) a dismal eighth in the latest rankings.

In fact, we are witnessing something rather curious at the moment with the exception of Australia (73.77) at the top and Zimbabwe (7.49) at the bottom, a team's ODI performance seems to be inversely related to its Test performance.

Table A shows the current ODI rankings.

TABLE A: CURRENT ODI RANKINGS (as on December 19, 2006)

The corresponding LG ICC ODI rankings (as on Dec 19, 2006) are Australia (131), South Africa (126), New Zealand (113), Pakistan (112), Sri Lanka (108), India (106), West Indies (104), England (99) and Zimbabwe (23).

The LG ICC ODI ranking scheme place West Indies at the seventh place because it cannot reward their fine showing in the recent ICC Champions Trophy.

Details

The Rediff ODI rating is obtained by judiciously combining every team's weighted index (WI) and tournament index (TI).

The WI, based on the most recent ODI encounters between every pair of teams as shown in Table B, is essentially a weighted average that considers the 'opposition strength' (because wins against strong opponents must be rewarded more) and the 'home-away-neutral' factors (because, most teams win a lot of matches when they play at home, but lose many more in 'away' encounters).

The TI factors in a team's performance in tournaments and series (and thereby seeks to better reward wins in 'big' matches). The TI is currently based on a time 'window' spanning the period Dec 2005 to Dec 2006 (see Table C).
