New Zealand trouble Australia again

M J Manohar Rao and Srinivas Bhogle

When New Zealand last played away in Australia, in the 2002 VB triangular series, they kept defeating Australia (who kept defeating South Africa, who, in turn, kept defeating New Zealand in a bizarre triangular contest).

The 1-1 draw with Australia in the three-match Trans-Tasman Trophy, confirms that New Zealand still know how to trouble Australia in ODIs. The drawn series helped New Zealand (40.15) climb to the fifth place in the Rediff ODI rankings.

Australia (75.65) stay comfortably at the top, but have not looked as convincing lately in ODIs as in the Tests (where their corresponding Rediff Test ranking is a mighty 85.56).

The 4-0 win over Zimbabwe (10.40) helped England (43.46) climb to the fourth place, overtaking South Africa (39.38) and India (38.65).

Table A shows the current Rediff ODI rankings.

Sri Lanka 48.51 54.55 50.54 -1.26 2
West Indies 35.87 68.75 46.97 +0.18 3
England 40.12 50.00 43.46 +3.76 4
New Zealand 37.67 45.00 40.15 +0.58 5
South Africa 52.15 14.29 39.38 -1.98 4
India 45.60 25.00 38.65 -1.98 7

Zimbabwe 15.69 0.00 10.40 -0.66 9

The Rediff ODI Rankings judiciously combine a team's weighted performance index (WI) -- that takes into account the strength of the opposition and the 'home-away' factor, with its tournament index (TI) -- that rewards wins in 'do-or-die' or crunch matches during a 12-month 'window of reckoning' (currently spanning December 2003 to December 2004).

The rankings indicate that South Africa and India, in particular, are dropping steeply; they still win enough games, but have completely lost the ability to win, or perform strongly in tournaments. West Indies and England, on the other hand, are rather well-placed because of their superior tournament record during the past year.

The corresponding ICC ODI ratings (as on December 16, 2004) are Australia (136), Sri Lanka (119), New Zealand (118), England (109), Pakistan (109), West Indies (107), South Africa (101), India (100) and Zimbabwe (59).

Details

The weighted index (WI) is calculated based on the ODI scorecard that appears below as Table B. Details of the WI calculation appear elsewhere on Rediff.
